TEHRAN, Jan. 7 (MNA) -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei here on Thursday called for the revitalization of science in Iran.
In an address to university chancellors and directors of scientific and research centers, Ayatollah Khamenei stated that indifference toward science and hopelessness about scientific progress were major factors behind Western powers' influence over Iran in modern times.

The Supreme Leader said that it is necessary to create self-confidence in all scientific fields, to promote scientific development, and to believe in scientific progress and added that universities are important bases for realizing these goals.

Ayatollah Khamenei pointed to Iran’s great achievements in the field of science over the past two decades and said that efforts should be made to keep this process going.

Lauding the scientific capabilities of Iranian professors and academics, he underlined the need to respect and pay due attention to universities and professors.

The Supreme Leader went on to say that certain groups and individuals are attempting to question the scientific capabilities of the Iranian people, adding that Iranian history and civilization as well as the progress the Iranian nation has made over the past 25 years prove that the great nation of Iran has the ability to reach new horizons in scientific innovation.

On the importance of the cultural dimension of universities, Ayatollah Khamenei said that chancellors of universities and officials of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology shoulder a heavy responsibility to promote culture at universities.

The Supreme Leader expressed his support for political activities by university students and said the tendency of students to seek justice must be encouraged.

Their support for the oppressed nation of Palestine and resistance against Washington’s hegemonic policies are a manifestation of the justice-seeking attitude of Iranian university students, Ayatollah Khamenei observed.

Afterwards, Minister of Science, Research and Technology Jafar Towfiqi briefed the Supreme Leader on the activities and plans of the ministry.

Towfiqi emphasized the importance of scientific development at universities and said that over 4000 political, scientific, and cultural groups are currently active in Iranian universities."
