TEHRAN, July 4 (AFP) - Iran's car producers, already the Middle East's leading manufacturers, are fast heading to annual production levels of one million units and are hoping to emerge as a top regional supplier, industry officials said.

'The various car constructors will this year produce one million cars, which still is below the needs of the domestic market,' explained Reza Veysseh, director of Iran's Industrial Development and Modernisation Organisation (IDRO).

In 2006, he said, production could hit 1.5 million cars. Manufacturing has already risen elevenfold over the past 10 years. But Veysseh acknowledged the assembly line acceleration also needed to be matched with a boost in quality. Iranian cars are renowned locally for being substandard when compared to even cheaper foreign products."
