Iran produces 81 percent of the world’s saffron

Mehr News Agency English: TEHRAN May 31 (MNA) -- Iran exported some 8401 kilograms of saffron in the first month of the current Iranian year (beginning March 20), news reports said on Monday.

The report also noted that last year, the export of the commodity experienced a 10-ton hike as compared with that of the past year. Also, there was a 40-ton increase in Iran’s saffron produced in 2003 as compared with that of the preceding year, the report also explained.

According to the report, 30 to 40 tons of the saffron produced is consumed domestically and the rest is exported.

Producing more than 170 tons of dried saffron per annum, Iran produces 81 percent of the world’s saffron production.
